About this activity
Six sea creatures wait in framed boxes: an octopus, a pufferfish, a crab, a sea turtle, a jellyfish and a whale. Each one is only partly drawn. The octopus, crab and jellyfish are seen from the front, so the missing half mirrors the finished side. The turtle and the whale are seen from the side, with a flipper or a tail already drawn as a clue.
Skills this page builds
- Mirror thinkingThe front-facing octopus, crab and jellyfish invite children to picture and draw the same shapes in reverse.
- Judging proportionWith a tail or flipper already drawn on the whale and the turtle, children have to judge where the body should connect to it.
- Ocean vocabularyNaming tentacles, claws, shells and fins while drawing builds words for body parts.
How to do this activity
- Print the page and pick a pencil. Light lines first make mistakes easy to fix.
- Start with a front-facing animal (the octopus, crab or jellyfish). Look at the finished side and ask: what would the other side look like?
- Draw the missing half, matching the size and position of the parts on the finished side.
- Finish the whale, the turtle and the pufferfish using any parts already drawn as guides, then color everything in ocean colors.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Hold a small pocket mirror against the dividing line of the octopus, crab or jellyfish to show how the missing half would look.
- Say the animal names aloud, and in another language if you like, to build vocabulary.
- Encourage light guide lines first and a darker outline once the shape looks right.
- Compare the finished pages. No two will look the same, and that is part of the fun.
Frequently asked questions
Which animals are the easiest to finish?
The octopus, crab and jellyfish are seen from the front, so the missing half mirrors the drawn half. The whale and turtle need more thought because their bodies are seen from the side.
How long does the whole page take?
Plan on 15 to 25 minutes for all six animals, or do one or two per sitting.
