About this activity

Six simple shapes (a smiling sun, a cloud, an umbrella, a potted flower, a spotted mushroom and a leaf) are drawn on one side with the other side left to finish. Because each object looks the same on both sides, children can copy the finished half in reverse. It is the gentlest introduction to symmetry in the Complete the Drawing collection.

Skills this page builds

How to do this activity

  1. Print the page and pick a pencil.
  2. Start with the sun. Count the rays on the finished side and ask how many the other side needs.
  3. Draw the second half starting from the middle line and working outward, so both halves meet in the center.
  4. Complete the umbrella, the flower, the mushroom, the cloud and the leaf the same way, then color them in.

Frequently asked questions

What is symmetry, and why does it matter at this age?

A shape is symmetrical when one half is a mirror image of the other. Spotting and drawing symmetry is an early art and maths skill that also supports spatial thinking.

Is this easier than the Farm Animal Friends page?

For many children, yes. The objects here are symmetrical, so there is a clear rule to follow. The farm animals are seen from the side, which takes more imagination, although some already have part of the second side drawn as a guide.
