About this activity

Seven dashed zigzag trails run from a row of dinosaurs at the top of the page down to volcanoes, a pond, a cave and a nest of eggs at the bottom. The zigzags start wide on the left and get tighter toward the right, so the page slowly asks for more precise changes of direction.

Skills this page builds

How to do this activity

  1. Print the page and choose a pencil or a sharpened crayon, which gives more control than a thick marker.
  2. Pick a dinosaur at the top and a trail to follow down to the bottom. Start with the widest zigzag on the left.
  3. Trace the dashes without lifting the pencil, pausing at each corner to turn. Lift only when you reach the bottom.
  4. Move on to the tighter zigzags as confidence grows. Finish by coloring the dinosaurs, the volcanoes and the eggs.

Tips for parents and teachers

Frequently asked questions

Why practice zigzags?

Zigzags combine straight strokes with sharp changes of direction, like the movements in letters such as v, w, z and k. Practicing them lets the hand rehearse those movements before letter formation.

The narrow zigzags are too hard. What can we do?

Start with the wide trails on the left and trace with a finger first. You can also warm up with Rainy Day Raindrops to rebuild confidence with straight lines, then come back to the tight ones.
