About this activity
Seven big dotted shapes (a circle, a square, a triangle, a rectangle, a star, a heart and an oval) are surrounded by sparkles, magic wands and a baby dragon sitting on a cloud near a castle tower. Each shape is a closed outline, so children must bring the pencil back to where it started.
Skills this page builds
- Shape recognitionNaming each shape while tracing links the movement to the word.
- Corners versus curvesThe square, triangle and star have corners, while the circle, oval and heart are mostly curves.
- Closing a shapeEnding exactly where you began is a real challenge and a useful preparation for letters like o and a.
How to do this activity
- Print the page and choose a pencil.
- Start with the circle. Place the pencil on the dotted outline and trace all the way round until the ends meet.
- Move on to the other shapes. Say each name out loud, and pause at the corners of the square, triangle and star.
- Finish by coloring the shapes, the dragon and the magic wands.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Look for the same shapes around the room afterwards.
- Start with the circle and the square, and save the star and heart for last.
- If the corners are tricky, let your child lift the pencil at each corner.
Frequently asked questions
Which shape is the hardest?
Most children find the star and the heart hardest, because they change direction several times. The circle and square are the best starting points.
