About this activity
Six minibeasts wait to be completed: a butterfly, a ladybug, a bee, a beetle, a dragonfly and a caterpillar. The first five are seen from above and are nearly symmetrical, so the missing half is a mirror of the finished one. The caterpillar is seen from the side and has only a small detail already on the second half.
Skills this page builds
- Symmetry with patternsSpots, stripes and wing veins must be matched across the middle.
- Counting detailsCounting spots and legs on the finished side tells how many to draw.
- Minibeast vocabularyWings, antennae, legs and body parts get named as children draw them.
How to do this activity
- Print the page and use a pencil.
- Choose a bug and count its spots, legs or wing parts on the finished side.
- Draw the other side to match, starting from the middle line.
- Finish the caterpillar by imagining its missing body, then color everything.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Start with the ladybug; its spots invite counting.
- A small mirror along the middle line previews the missing half.
- Look for real butterflies or ladybugs outdoors to compare.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the caterpillar different?
It is seen from the side, so it cannot be mirrored. Children must imagine its body and legs instead.
