About this activity
A friendly long-necked dinosaur explores a valley with a river. Large eggs sit in the foreground, three-toed footprint marks cross the ground and crater-topped volcanoes rise behind the hills. Count a whole footprint as one mark, not three toes, and compare the volcanoes with the low rounded hills.
Skills this page builds
- Careful lookingSearching across the whole scene helps children notice shapes in different positions.
- Counting one by onePointing to each object and counting it once connects number words with a group of things.
- Sorting and recordingMatching each group to its legend icon links a picture category with a written number or tally.
How to do this activity
- Print the sheet and look at the three example icons below the divider. Name each kind of object together.
- Search only the large picture above the divider. The three legend examples are not part of the total.
- Choose one group, point to each matching object and circle it lightly as you count, so none is counted twice.
- Write the total in the empty box beside the matching icon. Younger children can draw tally marks or dots, or tell an adult the number.
- Repeat for the other two groups. Open the answers below together when you are ready to check.
- Color the complete scene with your own colors. There is no time limit and no need to rush.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Offer just one object group at a time to younger children; cover the other legend icons with a piece of paper.
- Follow a simple route from top left to bottom right. If an answer differs, count again together rather than turning it into a test.
- Try drawing one extra footprint outside the printed frame after counting.
Frequently asked questions
Do we count the examples below the line?
No. Count only the objects in the large upper picture. The bottom icons identify the groups and the empty boxes hold the totals.
Can a child do this without writing numbers yet?
Yes. Children can point, circle, say the total, or draw one dot or tally per object. An adult can write the numeral if the child wants.
