Nina, a shoemaker with round glasses and a wavy bob, stands beside a pair of lace-up shoes and two tiny barefoot elves in patched tunics. A moon shines through the workshop window. Black outlines, white coloring spaces and a complete frame.

Scene 1

The Last Pieces of Leather

Nina sits at her workbench at night, looking at flat leather pieces. A spool and an empty shelf are nearby; the moon is visible through an arched window.

In a little shop beside the village square, Nina made shoes. She smoothed the leather, stitched the edges and checked that every pair felt comfortable. She liked imagining all the places the shoes would go.

But one evening, her shelf was almost empty. She had only enough leather left for one more pair. Nina sighed. How would she buy more materials when this leather was gone?

She carefully cut the pieces and laid them on her workbench. Her eyes felt heavy. “I will sew these in the morning,” she said, putting her tools away.

Outside the arched window, the moon rose over the rooftops. Nina closed the shop and went to bed. The little pieces waited quietly on the table.

Scene 2

A Morning Surprise

In the morning, Nina smiles with her hands open in surprise beside a finished pair of lace-up shoes on the workbench. The sun appears through the window.

When Nina opened the workshop the next morning, she stopped in the doorway. The pieces of leather were gone. In their place stood a beautiful pair of shoes!

She picked up one shoe and turned it gently. Every stitch was neat. The soles were firm and the laces were tied in tidy bows.

“Who could have made these?” Nina wondered. She looked beneath the workbench and behind the door. Nobody was there. Even the spool seemed to be keeping a secret.

Nina set the shoes where a customer could see them. She still had a question, but now she had a hopeful smile as well.

Scene 3

Hope Returns to the Shop

A customer with a tote bag offers coins to Nina across the workbench. The finished shoes stand between them, with the workshop window behind.

Soon a customer came into the shop. “Just what I was looking for!” she said when she saw the shoes. She tried them on, took a few steps and smiled.

The customer paid Nina a fair price. With that money, Nina could buy leather for two more pairs. She cut the new pieces and left them ready on the workbench.

The next morning, both pairs were finished. The same thing happened again: Nina prepared the leather, and someone stitched it while she slept. More customers visited the shop.

At last Nina had materials on her shelves and enough work for the days ahead. She was relieved. But she had not forgotten her question. Who were the quiet helpers?

Scene 4

The Secret at Midnight

Two tiny barefoot elves in patched tunics make shoes on the workbench: one pulls thread through a shoe while the other steadies another shoe. Nina watches from an open doorway beneath the moonlit window.

One night, Nina waited quietly beside the workshop door. When the village clock struck midnight, she heard a tiny patter, then a soft rustle on the table.

Two little elves had climbed onto the workbench! Their tunics had patches, and their feet were bare. One held the leather steady while the other pulled the thread.

Stitch, pull, turn. Stitch, pull, turn. They worked together, checking each shoe before setting it down. Nina watched their careful hands with wonder.

Before dawn, the elves slipped away. Nina stepped into the room. “Now I know who helped me,” she whispered. “I wonder what would make their day a little warmer?”

Scene 5

A Thank-You in Tiny Sizes

Nina arranges two tiny tunics, pointed hats and two pairs of small boots on the workbench. A spool and folded fabric sit beside the gifts.

Nina found some soft cloth in her basket. She sewed two tiny tunics and made two little hats. One hat had a bell that gave the gentlest jingle.

Then she used small pieces of leather to make two pairs of boots. She checked the seams just as carefully as she checked the shoes for her customers.

That evening, Nina left the gifts on the workbench instead of leather to sew. Everything was just the right size for her visitors. She smiled and went to wait nearby.

She was not leaving another job for the elves. She wanted them to have something of their own: warm clothes, comfortable boots and a thank-you they could wear.

Scene 6

A Little Dance, a New Beginning

The two elves dance on the workbench wearing new unpatched tunics, pointed hats and boots. Nina smiles and waves beside them; a pair of shoes sits to one side.

At midnight the elves returned. They stopped beside the tiny clothes, looked at each other and grinned. Then they tried on the tunics, hats and boots.

One elf tapped a new boot. The other twirled, and the little bell jingled. Nina came to the doorway and waved. “Thank you for helping me,” she said.

The elves bowed, danced across the table and waved goodbye. Then they went off on adventures of their own. They did not return to make more shoes.

Nina kept working in her busy little shop. She had leather, customers and time to stitch with care. And whenever she heard a tiny jingle in the square, she remembered the friends who had helped her begin again.

A tiny bell jingled, and a new day began.

Notice the care others give, and find a thoughtful way to say thank you.
