About this activity
Three puppies have come for pretend grooming on paper. Their floppy, pointed and fluffy ears give each portrait a different outline. Add straight, wavy or curly fur on the forehead and ears, changing the length of the strokes as you go.
Skills this page builds
- Pencil controlTry separate straight strokes, a continuous wave and linked curls as three different fur textures.
- Drawing from a patternChoose where to add fur by looking at each puppy’s floppy, pointed or fluffy ears.
How to do this activity
- Print in portrait orientation using fit to page, keeping all four borders visible. Choose a pencil and coloring pencils.
- From top to bottom, trace straight strokes, waves and loops. Add matching fur on the puppies’ foreheads and ears; leave their eyes and noses clear.
- Color the puppies and their new fur. Point to one patch of straight fur and one of curly fur.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Try just three short strokes before filling a larger area. Use the wide floppy ears for longer marks and the smaller forehead for short tufts.
- Choose just one customer for a short session. Lift the pencil when needed and keep the hand relaxed.
Frequently asked questions
Can the fur go inside the printed outline?
Yes. Add texture inside the forehead and ears, or a few tufts outside the head. Keep the facial features visible.
