About this activity
Four sea friends want hair that floats like seaweed. Their open head outlines leave a large space for flowing strands. Explore a wave, connected loops, upright wavy lines and a spiral to create floating underwater hairstyles.
Skills this page builds
- Pencil controlChange from a sideways wave to upright waves, keeping the lower-right spiral turning around its center.
- Drawing from a patternUse the open outline above each sea friend’s face as space for floating strands.
How to do this activity
- Print in portrait orientation using fit to page, keeping all four borders visible. Choose a pencil and coloring pencils.
- Trace the wave and loops in the top row, the upright waves at the bottom left and the spiral at the bottom right. Repeat each movement as floating hair above and beside its head.
- Color the finished hair and clothes or faces. Tell someone which movement you liked best.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Move a hand gently like seaweed before drawing. Try two strands with space between them rather than a dense block of hair.
- Choose just one customer for a short session. Lift the pencil when needed and keep the hand relaxed.
Frequently asked questions
Why are the tops of the heads left open?
The gap is an invitation to finish the silhouette with your own hair. Let the strands start above the forehead and flow into the blank space.
