About this activity
Four children in raincoats are outside on a breezy day. Their hair is still missing, so your pencil gets to show which way the wind blows. Compare left-bending and right-bending strokes, then try loops and zigzags for four windswept hairstyles.
Skills this page builds
- Pencil controlFollow the left and right arrows to change the direction of the curves in the top two bubbles.
- Drawing from a patternRepeat the same bend across a hairstyle to suggest wind blowing from one side.
How to do this activity
- Print in portrait orientation using fit to page, keeping all four borders visible. Choose a pencil and coloring pencils.
- Follow the top arrows and trace curves toward the left, then toward the right. Below, trace loops and zigzags. Repeat each pattern as windswept hair.
- Color the finished hair and clothes or faces. Tell someone which movement you liked best.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Point to the side of the page the arrow indicates before drawing. The child can rotate the paper to find a comfortable hand position.
- Choose just one customer for a short session. Lift the pencil when needed and keep the hand relaxed.
