About this activity
Three friendly lions are arranged in a column, with space around each face for a new mane. Each lion has its own speech bubble: zigzags at the top, waves in the middle and loops at the bottom. Trace a sample and repeat it around that lion to compare pointed, wavy and curly manes.
Skills this page builds
- Repeating a movementTurn a short tracing sample into several tufts around the lion.
- Planning spaceLeave room around the ears and cheeks for the mane to grow.
How to do this activity
- Print in portrait orientation using fit to page, keeping all four borders visible. Choose a pencil and coloring pencils.
- Work from top to bottom. Trace the zigzag beside the first lion, the wave beside the second and the loops beside the third.
- Repeat each sample above and beside its lion’s face to draw three different manes. Leave room around the ears and cheeks.
- Color the three lions and their new manes, leaving their eyes and smiles visible.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Begin with a few tufts above one ear; a complete circle of hair is optional. Turn the paper when it helps the hand move comfortably.
- Compare a short tuft and a long one. Ask the child which line would make a pointed, wavy or curly mane.
