About this activity
Fold two wings upwards and add a smiling body to make a butterfly with raised wings. Set the butterfly on a paper garden and compare the patterns on its two wings.
How to do this activity
- Print on A4 or Letter in portrait, using Fit to page with all four borders visible. Use light card if your printer supports it, coloring pencils, child scissors and a glue stick. An adult helps with cutting. Color before cutting; leave glue areas uncolored.
- Cut the whole wing shape as one piece and cut the separate body. Keep the narrow bridge between the wings.
- Fold each wing gently upwards along its dashed line, keeping the middle bridge flat.
- Glue the middle of the body onto the hatched bridge, face at the top. Leave its rounded ends free and let it dry.
Tips for parents and teachers
- The top row is a key, not a piece to assemble: thick outside lines are cut lines, dashed lines are folds and diagonal hatching marks glue. Thin lines inside the pieces are decorations. The page border is not part of the model.
- Set the butterfly on a paper garden and compare the patterns on its two wings.
